overseeding

We have not even begun to cool down, but it is time to put together your checklist of products you are going to need if you plan on overseeding your warm season lawn come October.  If you still need to decide if overseeding is for you, please check back to my last blog.  It’ll help with that decision.

I will give a detailed plan on how to overseed as we get a little closer, but here is a list of items to pick up at the store this Labor Day weekend.  These are just recommendations, and the exact fertilizer numbers can vary, but it is best to keep your analysis in the range I provide.  

 Fertilizer – Starter fertilizer applied with the seed such as 6-20-20, 16-24-12, or 16-20-0 at 5 pounds per 1000 SF.  Your second fertilizer application will come two weeks after the seed has been down using a balanced fertilizer such as 15-15-15, 21-7-14, or 16-16-16.  You also want to make a final fertilizer application before we receive our first frost in mid November using calcium nitrate 15.5-0-0, 15-15-15, or 21-7-14 to push the growth.  Once we receive our first good frost you can put the granular away for a couple months as you will not get the reactivity from them with the low soil temperatures.

Verticutter (Ren-o-thin) – Make sure you lightly verticut the lawn in two directions to open the grass plant up and allow for better seed to soil contact.

Sharp Mower – Take your mower blade in to get serviced and sharpened up before you go in and start taking those mowing heights down.  Ideally in the next few weeks you will let your lawn start to grow up 30-40 percent in height so when you scalp it down you are taking it to a normal height.

Perennial Ryegrass – Make sure the label has a minimum of 96 % germination.  Anything less will produce unsatisfactory results and give you less than desirable color.  Seed should be all perennial rye grass with no annual rye grass or fescue in the mix. Seed needs to be applied at 8-10 pounds per 1000 SF and there is no reason to go at a higher rate. A higher rate will produce excellent color for the first month and then the ryegrass will start to choke itself out.  

Seed Cover – This can be used during the later part of the year to overseed to help keep heat in the ground. 

Foliar Fertilizers for the winter – If you are in the shopping mood and already at your local store pick up some foliar iron and potassium products for the winter months to maintain color.  

****TIP OF THE WEEK****  Start to let your lawn grow up in height if you will be overseeding this fall.  You will want at about 30-40 %  longer in height than you normally keep it.  This allows you to scalp in the fall to a reasonable height and will help your lawn recover next year.

Fescue Comes Through

Fescue sod is the ideal grass for your cool or shady lawn. If you would love green grass outside throughout the duration of the year – perhaps you live in a community development and you want to ensure that your grass is up to code for the homeowner’s association in a cooler climate year-round – it is fescue to the rescue.

This is a perennial grass for colder climates. What is so fantastic about fescue, however, is that it can withstand the heat as well, as is often seen in areas of Georgia, as long as the sod is taken care of with frequent watering and fertilizer. It can also take root and survive the frequently difficult-to-grow-in Georgia clay. It is a placid sod in that it is not invasive like Bermuda grass; it has a fast germination period to stave off soil erosion and can withstand heavy traffic well.

Brighten Up with Centipede

Centipede sod is called that for a reason … Many of us know that green is a tertiary, or secondary color. So, when you combine yellow and blue, the result is green. However, this kind of grass has a heavy leaning toward the yellow end of this scale, yielding a lighter lime green for your yard. It turns to go all the way to this yellow color during cold spells and with fertilizer with a high amount of nitrogen.

This form of sod reached our shores in the early part of the 20^th century from Southeast Asia because the government liked its uncanny ability to do well in soil that had little fertility, and it also does not need much maintenance. As well as doing well in the sunny heat, it also sits just fine in the shade. During the cool winter months, centipede grass lays dormant. Unlike other forms of grass we have to offer you in our communities, centipede sod can be cut quite closely when you mow it; if you mow it high it can create dead patches throughout your property. Bermuda

Bermuda sod is an ideal kind for the southeastern portion of the United States. That is because it likes it hot and sunny, and it does very well, unlike most other forms of sod, in salty areas such as the beach. That comes in very useful since the south features thousands of miles of coastline. It is also a very tough and rugged brand of sod and stands up to plenty of traffic, which makes it a very popular choice for parks everywhere, as well as golf courses.

Bermuda is a perennial kind of sod, which will robustly and healthily last through three years and even longer. This kind of sod is thought to have come to the states via the Caribbean from Africa anywhere from 250 to 500 years ago. It features that nice green color during warm temperatures, but in the winter it goes dormant and turns a brownish color. After winter, though, the sod wakes up around April and returns to its normal green state.

Zoysia sod

Zoysia sod is much-loved and much-used because of its resilience in challenging conditions. Like Bermuda, it absolutely thrives in bright sunshine in warm and hot temperatures, and it does extremely well in salty climates along the coast of the ocean. Unlike Bermuda sod, however, it carries a deeper green color, requires less fertilizer and features a spongier texture, a pleasant feeling underneath bare feet. This sod also maintains its robust health in heavily-trafficked areas, perfect for parks, especially those near or at the beach.

This sod is also known as Manila grass since it hails from Southeast Asia, including Japan and China. There are multiple varieties of this strain; however, most feature a very slow germination rate, so it is almost always sold in sod form. There are two general types of this sod:

• Emerald … This type does not need to be mowed very frequently because it has a slow growth. Not surprisingly, it has an emerald color and has a better shade tolerance than other varieties, but it is more sensitive to the cold.
• Meyer … This one has a wider blade than emerald zoysia and it is more tolerant of colder temperatures, though it can turn yellow during the winter and it is less shade-tolerant.

Sod in Atlanta

Winter started hard and stayed tough on grass in Georgia. We anticipate a demand for replacement sod in the spring.

University of Florida agronomists have identified the top four reasons grass in the Southeast is injured in cold months, that is, any time the temperature falls below 20°F

1) Tissue desiccation. The grass literally dries out during an extended cold snap.

2) Direct low temperature kills, in other words, a hard freeze.

3) Diseases

4) Traffic. Frozen grass becomes very fragile and the blades break when compressed.

That last reason is often overlooked. It is not only about obvious tracks where mud has replaced grass. But if an animal, jogger or golfer crushes frozen grass in Georgia, the protective crown is damaged and the death spiral begins.

Look for early signs of turf needing replacement in shaded areas, where it stays colder longer, gets colder faster, and where lack of sun reduces a plant’s ability to produce carbohydrates needed for increased cold tolerance.
